Horns of a dilemma

Well not actually but it would have been a good pun if it had been. I was hunting Satyr horns in Ashenvale with the warrior whilst waiting to get into BG, very good xp (17k / hr) even though I died a lot, couldn't handle 2 pulls at all of which you get quite a few. Didn't quite complete the quest so I will have to go back again, I am just a smidgeon off level 28 and I have 2 or 3 quests to complete in Ashenvale so thats going to be no problem and I should get halfway to the next level. I will have to go after the brutal armour I think soon though it looks like a pretty tough quest from what I have read in Thottbot.
I played te rogue earlier, I am after the poison quest and managed to get the key but got no further so I switched to the warrior in a huff!
Gonna play the Shaman tonight I think though I must admit I am enjoying playing the mage, I am at least beginning to work out what I shoud be doing with the different types of character even if I too slow to pull it off. I fought a shaman in duel yesterday with my warrior, well I say fought, it was a bit irritating really he kept putting down totems to slow me down and I therefore couldn't get near him to hit him so I got bored and wandered off. What I should have done is knock them out till he was out of mana which he soon would have been and then he would have been mine but there you go.

Aren't shamans annoying?

After I got my butt kicked by a shaman a while back, I asked him for advice on how to beat a shaman. He laughed. But he did say the way to beat a shaman (or at least live a little longer) is not to play the shaman's game. Shamans are similar to hunters because they like to kite. For the layperson, this means they goad on the opponent by getting just out of melee range, setting down something to slow the opponent, then backing up significantly so that while the melee opponent is fruitlessly advancing (quite slowly), the shaman is ripping the opponent up with spells. At the same time, the fireball totem thing is acting as the shaman's equivalent of an imp, just firing repeated volleys of flaming pain until it's destroyed. If you take the time to knock out the totems, most shamans won't mind. That's time you're distracted from the true target, which, to no surprise, hasn't suffered a bit of damage. And, if you do so happen to get a few good shots in, the shaman can easily kite you again while healing. NO FAIR!

That's why you hear more cries of "Nerf Shaman!" than anything else.

As I said in my post, I duel shamans to mimic paladins. Though these days I'm not sure how effective that is. With a paladin, I've learned one of the better tactics is actually to kite him! More on that later. Hope you had a good weekend.

I am trying to add a bit of flexibility, I've actually bought some ammunition for my gun! Which though it won't do too much damage may scare them a bit. I think also the thing with a shaman is to get them to run out of mana, without mana they are in trouble (though not as much as a mage would be - lol). Its good to know though as its knowledge for playing as a shaman, which I don't think I have been playing too well in pvp.
Weekend was good had some family up and survived a long run (just). And managed a couple of WoW though it was broken up a bit, I usually can't bank on playing.

The KITE is your friend...

I watched Elthir (32 level Hunter at the time) and Elzandra (33-34 level Paladin) duel in Darkshore one day. Elthir pwnd her hard for the first 3 fights while Elz' learned the very lesson of why even leather wearing hunters can beat the crap out of you if they can keep you at a distance.

The final fight was *much* closer. Elz killed Elthir's pet first off and started focusing on the hunter. What she had going for her was her ability to heal. Ultimately it came down to who ran out of mana first. Her heals ate up more points than Elthir's stings and shots. When she had to pause a little too long to recharge - bang - he got her again.

I read somewhere in duels with hunters that you should ignore the pet, but I guess if you can't get near the hunter then there is some satisfaction in killing there pet anyway. Hunters have quite a few slow abilities.

I've had my share of duels (and pvp) with plenty of hunters, and I can tell you it just depends on the hunter.

A GOOD hunter uses a combination of a powerful annoying pet and slowing abilities so that it's virtually impossible to choose one target and survive. As for rogue vs. hunter, one tactic I've actually succeeded with is (if you can get close enough) sapping the hunter, killing the pet, then working on the hunter. Without the pet, the hunter is at a great disadvantage. However, that rarely seems to work, since hunters immediately drop a frost trap when they know they're up against a rogue, and with the hunter's radar abilities, the rogue will quickly be discovered and killed.

A warlock actually has a decent chance against a hunter, since warlocks don't bother with melee. Fear the pet, slam the hunter with everything you have, fear the pet again, slam the hunter again, and maybe you'll survive the volley of shots. If it's getting too rough, fear them both, use first aid or something (healthstone), slam the hunter again, but keep that damned pet off of you.

For other classes, I'm not so sure what the best tactic is. I know hunters hate it when you kill their pets, so quite often in BG, I'll intentionally go after the pet even if I don't have to. (Yeah, I'm evil, but it's war, right?). Otherwise, I try to get to the hunter and ignore the pet. As I said, it very much depends on how the hunter's talents are spread, and with the new patch, I have no clue what the possibilities are, so it looks like we'll all have to learn to deal with hunters all over again anyway.

My rogue never had any problems with Hunters using the sap and then putting down his beloved family pet but my Warlock has real problems. The pets seems to take a lot of killing and ignoring it is fatal

Easiest to deal with them as a mage I guess, just sheep the pet or vis-versa. A hunter gets pretty scared without his pet!
